What is Corrugated Packaging?
Corrugated packaging refers to boxes and containers made from corrugated board — a material that consists of three layers of paper:
- Top liner — the flat outer layer
- Fluted medium — the wavy middle layer that provides strength
- Bottom liner — the flat inner layer
The wavy middle layer, called the flute, is what gives corrugated boxes their unique strength and cushioning ability. This structure makes corrugated packaging extremely strong, lightweight, and durable.
How is Corrugated Board Made?
Corrugated board is manufactured through a process called corrugation, which involves:
- Heating the paper sheets with steam
- Shaping the middle sheet into a wavy fluted pattern using corrugating rollers
- Gluing the flat liner sheets to both sides of the fluted medium
- Cutting and scoring the board into box shapes
- Folding and sealing into finished boxes
The result is a lightweight yet extremely strong material that can handle heavy loads, rough handling, and long-distance shipping.
Types of Corrugated Boxes
There are several types of corrugated boxes based on the number of walls:
1. Single Wall (3-Ply)
- One fluted layer between two flat liners

- Two fluted layers with three flat liners
